Hampshire Goodies

Red-breasted Goose with Brent Goose
Though the weather seemed bad Saturday night, Sunday morning brought sunshine and clear skies. This prompted me to have a go at not one, but three target birds in Hampshire. First up was the Red-breasted Goose at Farlington Marshes just outside Portsmouth. A short walk and scan with two other birders from Kent produced distant but good views of this rare goose. In these pictures it looks very obviously different to the Brent Geese but it soon blends in with them once its back is turned and feeding.

Next on the agenda was a short drive down to Southsea where after a little poking around I found three Purple Sandpiper mixed in with some Turnstone; huddled out at sea on a green buoy. This was just up past Southsea Castle

My final Hampshire pit-stop was at Walpole Park in Gosport for 'Waldo', an overwintering Ring-billed Gull. This gull has overwintered at this spot for about seven years now. Not sure if there is much information on where this bird goes in the summer as it is not ringed. On arrival there was torrential rain for about ten minutes. Luckily, this cleared, and as you can see below; I had lots of fun with my old but trusty point and shoot Panasonic. I have had this camera for about four years now and am still having so much fun with it. Panasonic Lumix DMC-8.

Pulborough Brooks - 11th November 2012

Greenfinch - note the ring on the left leg

An enjoyable day at Pulborough today with wonderful sunshine. I totaled 53 species at the reserve but dipped out on the elusive Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. I put 1 1/2 hours in on my first vigil and 1 hour 15 minutes on the second. Five minutes after I had left the first time, the bird was spotted for about 30 seconds then heard about 20 minutes before I returned for the second sitting:) That's birding.....

Noteworthy species include Peregrine, Sparrowhawk, Buzzard, Little Egret, Bullfinch, Goldcrest, Lesser Redpoll, Siskin and Raven. Though I spent a lot of time waiting for my little nemesis friend I did have lots of fun with my point and shoot:)
